The frost this morning bit the vine,

The fig is bare, the olives shine;

The crows flew low above the hill,

The sheep passed on, the wind was still.

And in the quiet of the land,

A shepherd raised his weathered hand

And crossed himself as though he knew

That frost had taken something too.
